The diagrams below show some principles of house design for cool and for warm climates.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Candidate’s response

Different climate conditions need different structure of the house.  The diagrams show us some principles of building a comfortable house for cool and for warm climates.

We can see a house design which fits to the cool climate.  Its building material is the heat storage and it has a high-angled roof which is flat and leaning in order to get more sunlight.  The whole house which is built by the thermal building material is almost surrounded by the insulation.  These two kinds of building materials are used to avoid the loss of heat.  Windows are a very important part of the house.  If the house is located in the place of a cool climate, its windows must be easy to receive more sunlight, just like the one on the first diagram.  It can be lighted directly form the sun.

The second group of diagrams show the principles of house design for warm climate.  Different from the first diagram, the house roof is not flat but angled.  Because of the warm climate, the insulation is only built on the roof of the house, but its use has been changed.  The material of the house roof is composed of insulation and reflective roof material to keep the room from being influenced by the outside high temperature.

The windows hide under the shade of the roof to prevent the sunlight from coming in.  And windows are often closed in daytime and open in the night in order to make the heat go out with the circulation of air.

Examiner comment

The answer focuses on the most significant information in the set of diagrams and effectively highlights the main differences between the two house designs.  The opening paragraph could have provided a better introduction but, overall, ideas are arranged logically and the answer is well organized with clear linking and paragraphing.  A good range of vocabulary and sentences structures is used, although there are some errors and the wording from the task is not paraphrased sufficiently.  There is a range of sentence types and a good level of accuracy, even in complex sentences.  Errors do not affect communication.
